The Hope Soccer Tradition
The Hope College Soccer Tradition
Hope College introduced soccer to its varsity athletic
program in the mid 1970s. Since then, soccer has
established an outstanding tradition in a college with a rich
athletic heritage.
In 1990, Steve Smith became the sixth head coach in Flying
Dutchmen history. After inheriting the program, Coach
Smith has established Hope College soccer as one of the
premier Division III soccer programs in the country. Under
Smith, Hope College has won eight MIAA championships,
produced 13 All-Americans, and is consistently ranked as
one of the top teams in the nation. Over the past six
seasons, the Flying Dutchmen have compiled a 90-28-8
record en route to winning four MIAA championships while
earning four coveted NCAA tournament bids.
The women’s soccer program has finished as MIAA
champions three of the past five seasons, capturing the
coveted NCAA tournament bid in 2003, 2004, and 2005.
The Flying Dutch are continuing to build on the strong
tradition of women’s athletics at Hope College.
